Molly McIsaac’s Cosplay Survival Guide: Part Uno

Days. We only have days before pressing crowds, cosplayers galore, people spending way too much money, celebrity sightings, liver abuse, and a major American city being completely overrun by geeks.

I speak, of course, about San Diego Comic-con: The mecca of all things geeky, nerdy, dorky, and any other descriptor for people of the pop culture loving variety. It is truly a god amongst minions – a Lady Gaga in a room of middle aged mommy bloggers. The convention to end all conventions. And along with these credentials comes something equally as incredible: some of the best cosplay in Western Culture.

People go TO SDCC just to cosplay. People go TO SDCC just to gawk wildly at the ridiculously talented cosplayers. Expect to see pure embodiments of some of your favorite characters – sexy girls in micro armor, dudes finally realizing their dreams of being Spider-man… etc. It’s definitely the sort of convention that makes people want to try cosplaying themselves – are you one of those people?

Whether or not you want to try to throw something together in thenext week or you’re making a costume for Halloween or a year from now, there are some pretty basic steps you should follow if youare a first time cosplayer.

I’m going to assume you roughly know what cosplay is – after all, you are reading this on a website dedicated primarily to this hobby. However, do you know what it stands for? Cosplay is short for Costume Play – people dressing up as their favourite characters from all walks of geekiness. There is some debate about where the line is crossed (is Civil War garb cosplay? Is dressing up like Katy perry cosplay?) but the rule I follow is if it’s a costume and wearing it makes you happy, then go for it.

The first step to cosplaying is picking a character you want to represent. Have you always related to Sailor Moon? Hated Dr. Doom but wanted to challenge yourself with that costume? How comfortable are you with your body? Your craftsmanship skills? These are all questions you have to ask yourself. The most important things about cosplay are how passionate you are about that particular costume (you probably won’t finish if you’re only mildly interested), how much money you want to spend, how comfortable you want to be (most cosplay is not made for every day wear), etc. So you’ve decided who you want to cosplay?

Making your own costume vs commissioning or purchasing a pre-made one

There are benefits to both of these options. If you make your costume yourself, you have the satisfaction that comes with completing a project and the swell of pride when someone asks you if you made it yourself and you can proudly respond with “yes!” The cosplay community definitely leans towards people making their own costumes – the most intense cosplayers tend to look down their noses at people who buy costumes. But to that I say: “PAH!” If you’re bad at sewing or have never made a costume before in your life, wouldn’t you rather look good than go to a convention in a poorly made costume? There are lots of resources for pre-made cosplay: eBay, etsy, commissioning other cosplayers through random google websites. Or you can go the other route: alter pre-made articles of clothing to suit your needs. Half make your cosplay!All of these decisions need to be made on your skill level and how much you think you can handle or not handle.

Invest in a Good Wig

I cannot stress this enough. A wig essentially can make or break a cosplay. It doesn’t matter how epic your costume is – if you can see the netting of your wig or it looks fake, it takes away from the entire package. Never EVER buy pre packaged Halloween wigs – these are generally cheaply made synthetic wigs that will look shiny and fake under harsh lights. A good “medium cost” wig that looks great is called kanekalon. It’s also synthetic, but of a much higher quality. Some kanekalon wigs can even look like real hair at first glance! You can buy these at high scale costume shops, but I buy most of mine on ebay (wholesale from China is my best friend). If you’re SUPER serious you can get a real human hair wig (or a blend of half real hair and half kanekalon), but this will run you a couple of hundred dollars.Make sure your wig is styled as your character’s hair. If you’re unsure on how to style your wig (there are a ton of resources online for wig styling how tos!), try to get involved in your local cosplay group and learn from someone with wig experience.

Give Yourself a Time Line

If you’re anything like me, you will wait until the last minute and try to throw together your cosplay with hours to spare. DON’T BE ME. You want your costume to be high quality and you don’t want to have intense anxiety the day before the con about whether or not your final Amazon shipment will be there in time. What I’ve found is a good way to combat this is that I make myself a self appointed timeline – complete with deadlines – and then I tell Facebook about it. I tell Facebook: “hey, I have to get this skirt sewn by x date. If I don’t do it, you guys can punish me as you see fit.” I am so terrified of my friends that I ALWAYS get things finished on time and there has never been a mishap. Get creative with your deadlines! Reward yourself with cookies or a new anime box set, but try to stick to a timeline. Trust me – you’ll be MUCH happier.

Be a Perfectionist

Pretty self explanatory. Even if you feel like your costume is finished, don’t just half ass things. If there is thread sticking out or a patch is only halfway attached, FIX IT. Other cosplayers WILL notice these things, and you will have to forever stare at pictures or yourself in your costume with glaring errors. Take the extra couple of hours to make it the best you are capable of.

Wear Makeup

A lot of people seem to overlook this stage. When you are finally ready to wear your cosplay out to the convention – you’re all laced in, your wig is awesome, you feel a million bucks… don’t forget to put on your face, too! Think about it: you’re depicting a fictional character. YOU want to look fictional, too! This goes for women AND men. If you’re not good with makeup, go get it done at a makeup counter or use youtube tutorials (there’s a wealth of them – even ones that show you how to look more like an anime character!)

Swirling skirts under chandeliers. Garish masks over laughing faces. Goblins, fairies, and too much wine. No, it’s not a scene from a fantasy, but it’s as close as you can come in Los Angeles. It’s the Labyrinth of Jareth, an elaborate masquerade ball which annually takes place over one weekend in late June or early July.

I first learned about this magical event while attending the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in 2011. A postcard advertising the event caught my eye while I was browsing elaborate masks. I was unable to attend that year, but put the 2012 dates on my calendar months in advance in the hopes that I might go this year. The time came and my boyfriend and our best friend agreed that this was an event worth attending.

We were all attending the Masquerade with varied expectations. For me, the event was a dream come true even before we stepped through the doors. For Topher, our friend, it was a neat idea which he approached with cautious excitement, renting a ruffled shirt and vest, and buying a Venetian mask. For Sam, my boyfriend, this was Ren Faire 2.0, probably a horrible idea, but he got a creepy plague doctor mask and a black robe and attended with the intention of getting drunk enough not to care.

If you’ve never seen Jim Henson’s 1986 film Labyrinth but love fantasy, cosplay, music, dance, and revelry, the event is still enchanting. If you’re a die-hard fan of the film like I am, the night is everything you could ask for and more. It was as though I had taken a bite of a peach and found myself inside a party in a bubble.

Every single person in attendance was costumed, instantly taking the event to a level that the Renaissance Faire can never hope to achieve. The majority of the costumes were elaborate and fantastical. It’s one of the only events I’ve ever attended where I felt dramatically underdressed – and I was wearing a pink medieval gown, professional makeup, and a mask (pictured below with my friend Topher).

The masquerade takes place at Park Plaza, an ornate building with an undeniably enchanting atmosphere. Stone columns, arched doorways, and fine wooden details transport guests to the castle beyond the goblin city. It is difficult not to feel regal when climbing Park Plaza’s grand staircase.

Performers of varying arts lend a mystical air to the event. In the spectacularly lit gardens outside the building, we watched fairies twirl light-up hula hoops. In a gilded ballroom which made me feel like I was in 18^th Century France, we listened to a live opera singer who had flown all the way from Germany to perform and the ball. At one point, a young man dressed as a pirate lion took me for a waltz around the ballroom.

My favorite performance of the evening was the excellent band “Alice” playing the largest ballroom. Their mind-blowing rock set had an otherworldly sound that fit the event perfectly. It was easily one of the highlights of an extraordinary evening. The rest of the performances are too great in number and too elaborate for me to describe, and I am certain I did not see them all, there were so many places to be at once.

It is not the terrifically organized event that makes the Labyrinth of Jareth an unparalleled evening, however, but the lavish costumes and spirit of its guests. Truly this event brings out the best in cosplay, lending attendees not only an occasion but also an environment suited to full characterization.

Costumes range from fantasy to steam punk to recreations of familiar characters. We were excited to bump into The Doctor, who seemed entirely fitting for the environment. The majority of the costumes at the masquerade were original, perhaps a key distinguishing trait from other cosplay events. This gave the event an air of authenticity and originality; it was easy to lose ourselves in the unfamiliarity of the masquerade’s characters and truly believe for a moment that we had stumbled into a goblin ball.

Part of Ariel’s World: How to Be The Little Mermaid

Cosplaying the Little Mermaid seems like it could be as challenging as fulfilling Ariel’s dream of having legs, because you may need the opposite… fins! Creating a fabulous Ariel cosplay presents a great number of challenges, but a successful Little Mermaid cosplay can be achieved in many different ways. Ariel places second in the Disney Princess race for “most costumes worn in one film” with seven totally unique outfits. Only one of those seven involves attaching a giant fish tail to your body, so don’t sweat it – you can still be Ariel if you don’t want to bind your legs together and spend the whole day tripping over yourself.

The terrific thing about cosplaying Ariel is that once you’ve got the hair right, you’re half way there. That’s not to say that cosplaying Ariel is a walk in the park, but people see red headed women and already associate them with The Little Mermaid. The collective unconscious has already done half your work for you! So let’s start there….

The Hair

Ariel’s hair is arguably the most important factor in a Little Mermaid cosplay. The only redheaded Disney Princess (and no, the upcoming protagonist from Pixar’s Brave doesn’t count), Ariel’s hair is iconic and an inseparable part of her identity. To little redheads everywhere, Ariel is their princess. Get the hair right and you’ve done half the work. Your costume will be recognized.

There are two ways to accomplish this.

1: Get a rad wig.

2: Be a red head.

Make it big. Ariel’s hair is huge and flouncy even when she’s on land. She’s got huge bangs that could obscure one of her eyes if they didn’t defy gravity a little bit. Wig or natural hair, make try to get your hair big and flouncy.

Part it at the side. Ariel’s hair had a dramatic side-part that contributes to her intense bangs. In the movie, the part of her hair begins somewhere above the corner of her eye.

If you’re a natural redhead and don’t want to wear a wig, there are a few things you can do to really push that Ariel look over the top.

Accessorize. Lots of Ariel cosplays incorporate sea shell accessories to pin her hair to the side.

Get a big, dumb flower that looks like it came from under the sea and stick it in there. Ariel does in fact wear a sea flower in her hair for a good portion of the movie.

Wearing her black, white, and blue outfit? Make a giant blue bow to match!

You’re a princess, wear a crown! Ariel’s crown is seen during the wedding scene. It’s a simple, solid golden tiara, paired with a veil (but it would work fine without the veil).

The Eyes

Ariel has huge, expressive, blue eyes, courtesy of animator Glen Keane who has given similar gorgeously expressive eyes to characters like The Beast and Rapunzel. You may not have Ariel’s eyes, but you can still make your eyes pop with the right eyeliner or fake eyelashes.

I can’t say for sure if anyone has or hasn’t tried this with an Ariel cosplay yet, but using some of the elements from this Bad Romance makeup tutorial could go a long way towards a perfect Ariel eye makeup job.

Finally, don’t pose for photos with your eyes closed or down. Look up at things, keep your eyes wide!

While we’re on makeup, don’t be afraid to let your lipstick pop. In the movie, Ariel’s lips are as red as her hair.

The clothes

When it comes to Ariel, you have loads of outfits to choose from. First of all, there’s her apparent daily garb, a purple shell bra and nothing but her fins.

Then you’ve got outfit #2, the dress Ariel makes from discarded sails or some sort of tarp found at the beach, tied together with rope.

Costume #3 is the poofy, pink gown that the palace women dress Ariel in for dinner with Eric and Grimsby.

Next we have #4, the black corseted blue and white “peasant” dress that Ariel wears during her tour of the kingdom and “Kiss the Girl”. This is probably the most popular choice for Ariel cosplay because of the easy options it presents (it’s only three pieces and one of them is a corset) and because it’s so damn cute!

While still on land, Ariel wears #5, a pink nightgown, which I just think is too adorable.

After the final battle with Ursula, King Triton gives Ariel legs and because he’s her dad, he dresses her in #6, a magical purple gown apparently made from sea foam, instead of leaving her on land naked like Ursula did.

Finally, moments after Ariel wears the sea foam dress, we see her in #7, a white wedding gown with a simple gold tiara and white veil.

Official Disney Ariel Dresses

Ariel obviously presented a unique marketing difficulty for Disney. How do you merchandise a character who has fins for half the film? Over the past twenty years they’ve come up with a few solutions. In Fantasmic, the nighttime water show at the Disney Parks, they’ve dressed Ariel as a mermaid and had her perform while seated on a rock. For a while, Ariel could be seen this way at a special meet and greet location designed just for her. Recently, though, Ariel appears in the parks in a minty blue-green gown with a matching sea flower in her hair. The cut of the dress is similar, but not identical to Ariel’s wedding dress.

Personally, I think the dress is a terrible choice. Every single other Disney character at the parks wears her own clothes from the movie. Ariel could easily wear her pink dress from the film and look completely adorable. I do approve of them not dressing her in her wedding dress and not sending another, “all you want is to get married” message to little girls. But, hey, to each her own. Some gals really like the outfit Disney costuming has created for Ariel. So if you dig this look, and I will admit, it’s obvious with the red wig who she is, cosplay away.

Hipster Ariel

A popular meme emerged in 2011: Hipster Ariel. She wears trademark hipster glasses and an agitated expression screencapped from an early scene with Skuttle.

Spotlight on Claire Hummel, Artist and Disney Princess Extraordinaire

Artist Claire Hummel wasn’t thinking “series” when she began work on her historically accurate rendering of Belle from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She was thinking something more along the lines of, “Wouldn’t it be fun to adjust Belle’s dress to 1770’s French court fashion?” The response on Tumblr and Deviant Art was so overwhelming, however, that she was inspired to take on the overwhelming task of revising the iconic costumes of all the Disney Princesses.

Since last March she has completed all the “official” Disney Princesses (as outlined in my previous post, minus the popularly requested Eilonwy, who is not actually an “official” Disney Princess) and she’s just begun work on the non-Princess Disney gals. Claire’s stunning design for Meg from Hercules is already up on her website.

Claire is an artist and cosplayer currently working in the video game industry. That Princess Girl couldn’t resist a chance to chat with her and grill her about her gorgeous art, as well as her cosplay tendencies.

A fan (and proud collector) of Claire’s Historical Disney Princess series, I couldn’t help myself when it came to the first question of the interview. So I led with…

So, when’s Eilonwy going to be ready?

Claire: [Laughing] She’s on my to-do list… when I started the series, I immediately went to Wikipedia and looked up a list of the Disney females, and Eilonwy was on that list. I’ve had enough requests for her that I’m starting to feel guilty that I haven’t drawn her yet.

Claire went on to explain that she’s not a big fan of The Black Cauldron, and I really can’t blame her. Pro Disney Tip: If you haven’t seen this shabby feature, skip it and read the wonderful Lloyd Alexander series that it’s based on.

Did you expect your historical Disney Princesses to take off the way they did? Belle has 174,000 views on DeviantArt, and Jasmine has 200,000!

I have a lot of people following me on DeviantArt, so I figured they were going to like it. I think that Belle was one of the first things I posted on Tumblr, so it was my first experience seeing something explode virally like that. It’s such a great website to get your art out in front of a lot of people, really fast- I can’t even remember what I did with myself before Tumblr.

What was your research process for these ladies?

With Belle I didn’t really have a process in place yet, she was just sort of off the cuff and I was looking at a few choice dresses for reference. I ended up making folders on my computer for all the female characters I could think of when I started considering the project as a series, pawing through the movies looking for references to the time period. I have a lot of historical reference books and blogs that I read as well, and they’ve been immensely helpful.

As a Princess Aurora fan, I was excited to see that you posted both pink and blue versions of the Sleeping Beauty gown.

I had to! I was predicating that people would complain about it one way or the other. People have since pointed out that I should do a version where she’s splashed with both colors, so we’ll see.

Which historical piece are you the happiest with?

Probably Tiana. I just like the balance of “it still looks like her in her dress” but “I also got to do a lot of fun new things with it.” I also love Jasmine — to be honest it was fun to draw a tiger, and it was refreshing to draw something that wasn’t just western clothing.

Now that you’re done with Princesses and have completed Meg from Hercules, which character do you think you’ll go on to next? We won’t hold you to your word if you don’t want us to.

I’m afraid to promise anything, I feel like people will come after me with pitchforks if I change my mind! I have one friend who wants to make an Alice costume, so I might do that next. My friends in LA who’re planning on doing a cosplay group have been nudging me to do certain characters, so that’s why I did Megara.

How do you feel about others cosplaying your art?

Oh, it’s so exciting to me. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have the patience to do my own designs- I put a lot of detail into some of those drawings. People e-mail me to ask for my blessing and I always say yes, with the provision that they send me pictures of the cosplay when they’re done! So far I’ve only gotten one, of Snow White, but I can’t wait to see more.

How did you get into cosplay?

I guess my first cosplay was when I was in middle school, when I was ten or eleven; I dressed up as Sailor Moon, and then Sailor Neptune the following year. My mom was amazingly accomodating back then, and helped me with sewing all my costumes. I didn’t realize I was doing cosplay back then, or at least I didn’t realize there was a word for it- I was just making costumes from popular culture. Later on in high school, I ended up making Eowyn and Grima Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings.

I owe so much to my mom for entertaining the fact that her daughter wanted to dress up as a greasy villain from Lord of the Rings. It wasn’t until I got to college and started meeting other people making similar costumes that I realized, “hey, this is a thing!”

So now what’s your favorite cosplay project?

I had the chance to dress up Sarah Connor from Terminator 2 a few years back, which was one of my favorites to wear. I didn’t have to sew a lot, unlike most of my costumes, so it was easy to put together, I looked the part, and it was really fun. My friend Andrew was dressed as the T-1000, so we got pulled up on stage at the Terminator Salvation panel at Comic-Con…

Who’s your favorite non-Disney Princess?

Ooh, yikes! That’s a really tough call, just because my dad was working at Disney when I was a kid so I just completely ignored most of the other big studios. I feel bad saying that I thought Anastasia was a travesty, since a lot of people really love it… Probably Chell from El Dorado? Or Zipporah from Prince of Egypt.

What are you working on cosplaying right now?

I really want to do Jane from Tarzan because I’ve already made short, Victorian bustle dresses. That’s sort of why I’m holding out on drawing her for the Historical Disney Princes series– I don’t want someone to wear the design before I get a chance to!

I’d love to do Jesse from Toy Story, and- it’s slightly weird- but I’ve always wanted to do Jafar from Aladdin. I don’t know if I’d be a female Jafar, or if I’d just try to rock the beard. I find myself going back to Disney for ideas a lot, it’s hard to resist.

I like to choose characters that I at least think I could pull off to some degree- that’s usually my cosplay mantra. I’ve never really seen myself in any of the main Disney protagonists, so my sights tend to drift to sidekicks and peripheral characters.

If you were going to create a cosplay of one of your completed historical Disney Princesses, which would it be?

I love the stripes on Cinderella, so that would be kind of fun. And I love Snow White– I love any excuse to wear slashed sleeves.

Do you use wigs in your cosplays?

I didn’t used to, simply because most of the characters I chose to cosplay had brownish-blonde hair from the start. But with my most recent Poison Ivy costume, I’m learning how to shop for wigs, how to wear them properly and care for them. I’m also in the process of figuring out how to put on makeup like an adult, and how to use that to make myself look more like a character.

What’s your favorite convention/event?

I love San Diego Comic-Con. It’s such a madhouse, but it’s hard for me to imagine not going year after year.

When did you decide to become a professional artist?

This isn’t the most exciting response, just because I feel like every artist had this story of, “I’ve been drawing since I could pick up a pencil,” but, well, that’s kind of it. I just always drew, even if I didn’t think I was going to go to college for it or pursue it as a career. I used to visit my dad when he was working for Disney and Dreamworks, and being in that creative world was definitely inspiring to a little kid.

I’m working in the games industry right now, which I absolutely adore, but I’ve always pictured myself ending up in animation. And of course, in some corner of my mind I’ve always wanted to be an Imagineer… It’s something I’d love to do, I’d also have to actively shift my portfolio to include props and environment art, instead of just character design.

On a related note, I actually got to work on the new Kinect Disneyland Adventures game, which was a blast. Even if I don’t get to be an Imagineer, getting to design the digital counterparts for characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion was really fun.

So where can readers find you and your art?

I’m going to have a table at Emerald City Comic-Con at the end of March, and I’ll have art in the art show at Norwescon 35. I might be sharing a table at the Stump Town Comics Fest down in Portland, but I’m still figuring that out out.

Etsy Spotlight of the Week :Objet d’Art Designs

“Yayyy!”

The high pitched, overjoyed sound ellicits instant imagery within me: butterflies, rainbows, puppies, sparkles… and PONIES! All kinds of ponies, ponies in every color, ponies with long manes and short manes, wings and horns, with derpy eyes or pretty eyes: ponies fill my head.

And the one thing these ponies all have in common? Cutie marks: a mark or brand on their flank that is bestowed upon them as they learn certain characteristics about themselves. These ponies galloping around my brain are from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, the ridiculously popular reboot of the classic 80s toy and cartoon. The light hearted series has swept its way across the internet and lodged its way intensely into pop culture – beloved by children and adults alike. Naturally, the intense fan base this show has obtained means more and more My Little Pony cosplays are popping up at conventions around the country.

Cosplaying a pony can be a fun and creative costuming experience. Since they ARE ponies, the costumes have a lot of creative open-ness: you just need to follow the same colour pallette and have a cutie mark somewhere on the costume and it’s likely you’ll be recognized (even without ears or a tail!). I really enjoy seeing all the different interpretations of ponies that have been popping up around the internet – for example, my friend Miranda did a super flirty Lolita Pinkie Pie.

However, one of the most challenging things about cosplaying a My Little Pony is getting a quality wig. Brighter coloured wigs usually appear cheaper or have a very low strand count (which means the weave shows a lot more), and as we as cosplayers know a good wig can make or break a costume. Luckily, the internet once again comes to the rescue: there is a very quality, dedicated etsy store that not only sells the main Pony’s wigs, but they are styled and come with ears! You can also purchase tails. After my perusal of various venues for MLP wigs, this is definitely the best resource I have found.

The seller’s name is Objet d’Art Designs, and her wigs are not only high quality and styled but they are very reasonable prices – most under 100 dollars. So if you’re thinking of rocking a MLP cosplay this convention season and don’t want to go through the trouble of finding yourself a nice wig and then styling it, check out this etsy store.
